Here, I analyse music videos made by other A-Level students
The first music video I chose to analyse is by someone who used Billie Eilish's lovely.
This video is an abstract music video. It does not follow narrative or a concept. This matches the "Pop" genre as many pop music videos are usually absract. Another way this music video really fits the genre is that the main focus of the music video is the artist. This is also a very common convention for pop music videos. Evidence of this is shown through various medium close-ups of the main character, and she is in every shot throughout the music video.
The actual music video of "lovely" is based on the concept of entrapment. We get wide shots, and close-ups of the two artists, Khalid and Billie, stuck in a glass box. This could perhaps mean that feel trapped in their own minds, which match the lyrics.
This music video has a more positive outlook than the original. Though the music video is abstract, the beautiful scenery and the gracious movements of the main character give it a more chill vibe.
The camera is used very cleverly. Though the artist is the main focus, they still make sure to include the landscape, and use it to their advantage. They use the landscape as transitions, for example, in minute 1:27, the camera goes from a medium long shot of the main character, and pans down to the ground. Then the camera in the next shot, is showing panning down to the main character from the sky. This is a very effective transition and looks almost flawless. Another transition used is with the main character's hair. This is shown 37 seconds in to the video, where the camera spins around the main character, ultimately getting closer to her hair. Then the spinning action continues however, the background is different. This transition was quite seamless and a very effective way to switch locations.
The second music video I chose to analyse is also one made with Billie Eilish's song "&burn". I chose to find as many Billie Eilish music videos made by other people so I could use them to compare my idea with, and see the different interpretations of her lyrics to mine.
The video is based around a concept, which is fire. Fire is present throughout the video and matches the lyrics of the song. This is more common for a Billie Eilish music video, as most of her music videos are based on a concept.
"&burn" itself does not have a music video to go with it, but as it's a remix of her song "watch", the original does have a music video. Unlike most of Billie's videos however, the music video for "watch" is more of an abstract music video. It fits the pop genre conventions more than her other music videos as bright colours are integrated, with the focus being mainly on Billie.
The A-level music video of this song also fits the genre conventions of pop music. The focus is very often on the main character, including close-ups of her face and extreme close-ups of her mouth while she is lip-syncing to the song.
Technology is cleverly used here as the person who made this matched certain cuts with the music. Like at the beginning we see the cuts between the flame and a close-up of the main character's mouth, the sound of the match getting lit (part of the music). More evidence of this is shown throughout the video, with cuts to black with the sound of the drums and the matches in the song. I think this use of editing is very effective considering it makes the music video come to life as it matches prefectly with the music. It also gives the viewers a feeling of satisfaction. Furthermore, the text at the beginning of the video that says, "Macey Smith - Watch & Burn", changes font with each drum hit in the song, which I also thought was a really clever idea since it makes the beginning slightly more interesting.
My third choice is a song called, "All My Friends", and I chose to analyse this video because it is also about a party. Reason being, my idea is also going to be based in a party scene. I thought it would be good to see how other people set up the party scene in a music video.
The song is by Snakehips and the genre is Eletronic/Electro Pop. The music videos for this genre mainly consist of, crowded locations, mainly nightclubs or house parties. The lighting is lowkey as these videos are usually set at night, however, do usually include some bright lights to match the atmosphere such as LED coloured lights.
The video already starts off with people passed out which is the typical idea of a party scene. So we can already tell it will match the genre conventions of the typical music videos. We get more evidence that this is a party scene as We get medium high angle shots of someone putting a full bottle of alcohol down onto the counter. People in this music video are seen drinking and doing drugs shown with medium shots of people taking some alcohol shots and a close-up of someone doing cocaine. These camera shots are effective as close-ups used here make the viewer feel closer to them and it fits the party idea really well. We also get wide shots of people dancing which fits the genre conventions as it states that wide shots are more commonly used.
The target audience for this video are teenagers and young adults. This is shown through a series of shots being taken from the snapchat camera. It is very common for teenagers these days to document everything that happens in their lives through social media, especially parties. Therefore, this text does appeal to its target audience.
The editing in this music video also matches the beats of the music. Some cuts have been done using this technique. For example, in second 59, the camera is showing a medium close-up of someon pouring a drink, then the camera cuts (on beat) to someone eating a slice of pizza, with a medium close-up. This is a good way to edit as mentioned before considering it is very satifying to watch, if done right.
